Red Alert: Carnivores Be Warned
Red meat can lead to breast cancer
A decade-long study of more than 90,000 women published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006 found that women who ate more than 1½ servings of red meat each day were twice as likely to develop breast cancer. Researchers believe cattle growth hormones and heterocyclic amines (HCAs), cancer-causing compounds that form when meat is cooked, could be to blame.
When you eat red meat, choose organic, which is free of growth hormones. And roast it in the oven instead of cooking it on the grill. Barbecuing produces more HCAs than roasting, according to the National Cancer Institute.
